Katie Green of Pearler: Designing boujee websites for conscious brands

Katie Green is a web designer from Sydney, Australia who makes websites that young-blooded people “just get”. Her business Pearler helps microbusinesses and solopreneurs to stand out authentically against a sea of look-alike brands, without having to sell a kidney. Katie has a website-in-a-day service and also offers unique Squarespace templates.

Why did you decide to start your own business?
I was getting frustrated with the amount of look-alike websites out there and decided to make sure everything I created from that point on was unique and unignorable.

I had a lot of microbusinesses and solopreneurs seeking options to get a website that didn’t look ‘template-y’, so I started offering bold Squarespace themes on Etsy and custom websites-in-a-day.

What has been the most rewarding aspect of running your business(es)?
When I get feedback that the websites I’ve created for people actually work, and that it feels truly authentic. They’re proud of it, they get compliments on it and feel like the people who visit their site are the kind of people they were hoping to attract.

What are your top 3 frustrations with managing money for your business and what would a better future look like?
In true millennial form, I love a side hustle and that’s how my template business was born. Between my product sales, client work and affiliate income, I’ve been yearning for:

• A streamlined view of my income sources
• Clarity on my recurring expenses, and
• Something pretty and intuitive to use!

Using neobanks for my personal accounts has been great, it’s clear where the future is headed. So it’s a no-brainer that our business banking needs to follow suit.

Plus, with so many young and clever Gen-Z adults also starting side hustles, I feel the time is now for this part of the industry to modernise.
